One of the Top Attractions on Mt. Lemmon
There are many reasons to travel up the scenic Catalina Highway. Visitors come for hiking, cycling, rock climbing, wildlife, astronomy, cooler temperatures, and, for the gift shops in the small mountain village of Summerhaven.
Ski Valley, however, remains one of Mt. Lemmon’s signature attractions. The setting alone makes the trip worthwhile. Located near the upper elevations of the Santa Catalina Mountains, Ski Valley feels remarkably removed from Tucson. Tall pines line the slopes, mountain breezes move through the forest and distant ridges stretch across the horizon.
The resort’s upper elevation reaches approximately 9,157 feet, creating an environment that feels entirely different from the desert only an hour away.
Whether you visit during the green months of summer or after a winter storm, Ski Valley offers a perspective on Mt. Lemmon that cannot be experienced from the road alone.
Riding the Mt. Lemmon Scenic Chairlift
When Ski Valley is not operating for skiing, the chairlift becomes the Mt. Lemmon scenic Sky Ride.
The complete ride lasts approximately 30 minutes, or about 15 minutes in each direction. As the chair begins climbing the slope, the base area slowly disappears behind you and the surrounding forest opens into a succession of increasingly expansive views.
There is no enclosed cabin separating you from the scenery. Your feet hang above the slope, the air becomes cooler as you ascend. The ride is not fast or intense. Its appeal comes from the opposite qualities: it is unhurried, quiet and wonderfully simple.
You may pass above grassy ski runs, wildflowers, rugged terrain and stands of pine. On clear days, the view extends beyond the immediate mountains toward the broad landscape of Southern Arizona.
The Sky Ride currently costs $17 for adults, with reduced prices for seniors, military members, teenagers and children. Tickets are sold at Ski Valley rather than online, and no scenic rides are offered while the mountain is actively operating for skiing.
Step Off and Explore the Top
One of the best parts of the experience is that you do not have to immediately ride back down.
Once the chairlift reaches the top, passengers can step off and spend time exploring the upper mountain. Depending on your interests and comfort level, that might mean taking a short walk, following a nearby trail or simply finding a scenic place to sit and take in the views.
There is no need to rush. Spend a few moments beneath the trees. Look across the surrounding ridges. Listen to the wind moving through the pines. On a clear day, the contrast between the forested summit and the desert far below is especially striking.
The summit elevation can make the temperature noticeably cooler than Tucson. Even during summer, carrying an extra layer is a good idea.
Visitors planning to explore beyond the immediate lift area should wear sturdy shoes, carry water and be prepared for changing mountain weather.
Bring a Picnic Above the Pines
The scenic chairlift ride becomes even more memorable when you turn it into a mountaintop picnic.
Before heading to Ski Valley, stop at Beyond Bread inside Mount Lemmon Lodge and pick up sandwiches, drinks and something sweet to bring along. Ski Valley is only a short drive from the lodge, making it easy to collect lunch before continuing up the mountain.
Once you reach the top, find a comfortable place to pause and enjoy your meal surrounded by forest and mountain views.
It is a simple experience, but that is exactly what makes it appealing. There are no reservations to keep, no complicated itinerary and no need to hurry back down. Just remember to pack out everything you bring with you and leave the mountain exactly as you found it.
The Ride Down May Be the Best Part
The ascent introduces you to the mountain, but the return trip reveals the full scale of the landscape.
As you ride down, the view opens directly in front of you. Forested slopes descend toward the base area, distant mountain ranges rise along the horizon and Southern Arizona stretches far beyond the pines. Because you are facing downhill, the return journey can feel even more dramatic than the ride up.
Keep your camera secure, but do not spend the entire ride looking through a screen. Some of the best moments are the ones you simply watch unfold: sunlight passing across the trees, shadows moving over the slopes and the desert appearing through openings in the forest.
Winter Skiing on Mount Lemmon
When enough natural snow falls, Ski Valley changes completely.
Green slopes disappear beneath white snow, chairlift riders arrive carrying skis and snowboards, and the quiet summer attraction becomes a working ski area. Ski Valley has 21 runs across approximately 200 skiable acres, with terrain for beginning, intermediate and advanced skiers.
The experience of skiing above the desert is part of what makes Mount Lemmon so unusual. You can leave Tucson surrounded by saguaros and, after climbing the Catalina Highway, arrive in a winter landscape of snow-covered pines.
Ski Valley relies entirely on natural snowfall and does not make artificial snow. As a result, the length and timing of each ski season can vary considerably. A season might last several months during a strong winter or only a brief period when snowfall is limited.
Visitors should always verify snow conditions, lift operations and road restrictions before driving up the mountain. Winter storms can result in temporary road closures, delays or traction requirements.
During active ski operations, the lift is reserved for skiers and snowboarders, and scenic chairlift rides are not available.
Planning Your Visit to Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley
Ski Valley is generally open Thursday through Monday and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Operating hours can vary, and ticket sales may end early because of lightning, rain, wind, high visitor volume or other conditions.
Before heading up, check current conditions directly with Ski Valley. This is especially important during the summer monsoon season and throughout the winter.
A few additional tips can make your visit more comfortable:
- Dress for the mountain. Temperatures near the summit can be considerably cooler than in Tucson. Bring a light jacket or extra layer, even during summer.
- Wear secure shoes. Closed-toe shoes or supportive hiking footwear are preferable if you plan to walk around at the top.
- Bring water and sun protection. The cooler air can make it easy to underestimate the strength of the high-elevation sun.
- Secure loose belongings. Hats, phones, sunglasses and other items should be held securely while riding the open chairlift.
- Be prepared to board independently. Riders must be able to get on and off the moving chairlift without employee assistance.
- Plan for two people per chair. Ski Valley permits a maximum of two passengers on each chair, including small children and babies. Dogs are not allowed on the lift.
Make Ski Valley Part of a Mt. Lemmon Getaway
Ski Valley can easily be visited as part of a day trip from Tucson, but staying overnight gives you more time to experience the mountain without watching the clock.
Mount Lemmon Lodge provides a comfortable base in Summerhaven, just down the road from Ski Valley. Begin the morning with coffee and breakfast, ride the chairlift, enjoy a picnic or hike near the summit and return to the village for a relaxed afternoon.
An overnight stay also opens the door to more of Mt. Lemmon: sunset viewpoints, guided astronomy, forest hikes, live music, seasonal events and quiet evenings beneath the pines.
Instead of trying to fit the mountain into a few hurried hours, you can let the day unfold naturally.
