Mt. Lemmon has always offered one of Southern Arizona’s most memorable mountain escapes. In little more than an hour, visitors can leave the Sonoran Desert behind and arrive among cool mountain air, towering pines, hiking trails, and the small village of Summerhaven.
As more people discover the Mt. Lemmon, however, that popularity has brought challenges, particularly when it comes to parking, traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and access to heavily visited recreation areas.
Now, two major infrastructure projects are helping address those concerns. The new parking area south of Summerhaven is complete, while a significant renovation of the Marshall Gulch Picnic Area and Trailhead now underway.
Together, these projects represent one of the most substantial investments in the Mt. Lemmon visitor experience in years.
The New Summerhaven Parking Lot Is Complete
After many months of construction, the new Summerhaven parking area is complete and open to visitors.
Located approximately one-third of a mile south of Mount Lemmon Lodge, the project adds a much-needed centralized parking option near the village. The improvements include:
- A paved parking lot with 76 spaces
- 21 additional on-street parking spaces
- A public restroom facility
- Improvements to Sabino Canyon Park Road
- A five-foot-wide pathway connecting with the Arizona Trail system
Altogether, the project adds nearly 100 designated parking spaces near Summerhaven.
For anyone who has visited Mt. Lemmon during a busy summer weekend, fall-color season, or one of the mountain’s popular snow days, the value of this project is easy to understand. Parking has historically been limited, sometimes forcing drivers to circle the village, park along narrow roads, or walk in areas not designed for heavy pedestrian traffic.
The new lot creates a safer and more orderly arrival experience while helping reduce pressure on smaller parking areas throughout Summerhaven.
Easier Access to Summerhaven
The parking lot is conveniently positioned for visitors planning to explore Summerhaven on foot.
From the lot, guests can walk into the village, browse local shops, visit Mount Lemmon Lodge, or, enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at Beyond Bread.
The new parking area is roughly a five- to seven-minute walk from Mount Lemmon Lodge. Visitors approaching from the north side of the lot will generally find the most direct route toward the village, while the southern stairs provide access to the roadway toward Marshal Gulch.
This gives day-trippers the option to park once and enjoy more of Summerhaven without repeatedly moving their vehicles.
It is also expected to improve traffic flow during events, holiday weekends, peak hiking periods, and other occasions when the village welcomes a particularly large number of visitors.
A New Connection to the Arizona Trail
One of the project’s most important features is its connection to the Arizona Trail.
The newly constructed pathway provides another access point for hikers and backpackers traveling through the Santa Catalina Mountains. It also helps separate pedestrians from vehicle traffic, creating a safer approach to nearby trails and recreation areas.
For guests staying at Mount Lemmon Lodge, this makes a hiking-focused getaway even more convenient. Visitors can enjoy breakfast at Beyond Bread, prepare for the day at the Lodge, and reach the trail system without needing to search for parking at an already crowded trailhead.
The lot will also serve an important role while construction continues at Marshall Gulch.
Major Improvements Are Underway at Marshall Gulch
Just beyond Summerhaven, another major project is reshaping one of Mt. Lemmon’s most popular recreation areas.
Marshall Gulch is a longtime favorite among hikers, families, photographers, birders, and picnickers. It provides access to several well-known routes, including the Marshall Gulch, Aspen, and Sunset trails, as well as connections to the broader Arizona Trail network.
Its popularity has also placed considerable strain on infrastructure that was not designed for today’s level of visitation. The existing dead-end parking arrangement can become difficult to navigate, especially when the lot reaches capacity and vehicles are attempting to turn around.
The improvement project is designed to make the site safer, easier to navigate, and better equipped to withstand future use.
Planned improvements include:
- A new loop road replacing the existing dead-end configuration
- Improved vehicle circulation
- Rehabilitation and replacement of paved surfaces
- Two new bridges over Sabino Creek
- A new restroom facility
- Replacement of picnic sites
- Restoration work along Sabino Creek and Marshall Gulch
- Upgraded recreation infrastructure for hikers and day visitors
The new bridges are being designed to accommodate 100-year flood events, an especially important consideration in an area affected by seasonal runoff and summer monsoon storms.
Although the parking capacity at Marshall Gulch will increase only slightly, from approximately 30 to 32 vehicles, the redesigned circulation pattern should make a meaningful difference. Instead of entering a congested dead end, drivers will eventually be able to follow a loop through the recreation area.
What Visitors Should Know During Construction
The Marshall Gulch Picnic Area and Trailhead closed from July 6 through July 26, 2026, for the project’s initial tree-remediation and public-safety work.
Following that initial phase, a pedestrian path is expected to provide access to the trails. However, construction is scheduled to continue through December 2026, and picnic facilities and restrooms are expected to remain closed throughout the project.
Visitors should be prepared for temporary detours, active construction, changing access conditions, and limited amenities.
Anyone planning to hike in the area should review the latest Forest Service or Arizona Trail Association information before leaving home. Older trail maps, downloaded routes, and previous trip reports may not reflect current conditions.
During the construction period, hikers and other visitors are encouraged to use the new parking area south of Summerhaven when appropriate.
Why These Mount Lemmon Improvements Matter
These projects are about much more than adding pavement and parking spaces.
They address several of the most persistent challenges facing Mount Lemmon:
