Astronomy Evenings at Mount Lemmon Lodge
Spend an evening exploring some of the brightest and most beautiful objects in the summer sky during a guided astronomy experience at Mount Lemmon Lodge.
As the sun sets over the Santa Catalina Mountains, astronomer and telescope maker Zane Landers will begin with the evening’s most prominent sights, including brilliant Venus and the waxing Moon.
Through a large-aperture telescope, guests will examine the Moon’s rugged craters, mountain ranges and shadows in remarkable detail, along with the changing phase of Venus. As the sky grows darker, the program will expand to include colorful double stars, bright star clusters and other summer highlights.
Although moonlight can make extremely faint deep-sky objects more difficult to see, specialized night-vision technology will reveal real-time views of summer nebulae and portions of the Milky Way that would otherwise be hidden. Potential targets include the Lagoon, Swan and Veil nebulae, depending on viewing conditions.
Binoculars will also be available for guests to scan the sky, and you are welcome to bring your own.
Zane provides live narration and guidance throughout the program, making complex astronomical sights understandable, engaging and memorable for beginners and experienced stargazers alike.
This is a relaxed, small-group experience designed to give everyone time to look through the equipment, ask questions and enjoy a summer evening beneath the Mount Lemmon sky.
Space is limited, and advance reservations are recommended.
Please dress warmly for nighttime temperatures at 7,700 feet. Avoid using bright white flashlights or phone lights once the program begins.
Observations are weather-dependent, and specific celestial objects may change based on sky conditions.

- ~8:00 PM – 9:00 PM: Outdoor guided telescope viewing
